The Administrative Council of the Cyprus Army Officers Association would like to inform you that an urgent General Meeting was held on 29th January 2016 at “Cleopatra” hotel in Nicosia with “The Future of Officers, Statutes – Solution Plan” as the topic for discussion. Hundreds of CAOA members attended the Meeting, expressing their support to the actions of the Administrative Council regarding the claim of our outstanding requests. The President of the Parliamentary Defence Committee, Mr. George Varnava, the Minister of Defence, Mr. Christopher Fokaidis, the General Secretary of PASYDY, Mr. Glaucus Chatzipetrou and Mr. George Basiakoulis all gave greeting speeches. In his speech, Mr. Varnava reassured that the Promotion and Retirement Regulations will be submitted to the Plenary of the House of Representatives for vote by the end of March. The Minister of Defence, Mr. Christopher Fokaidis, also assured that the rights of the National Guard members are safeguarded with any potential solution. He also announced the launch of a Military Defence Academy in Cyprus in the near future, where the members will be able to attend different schools that have so far operated in Greece only, as well as the implementation of a specialized system for the officers’ transfer, which are two issues whose solution has been timelessly preoccupied CAOA. During his speech, Mr. stressed the need to maintain the cooperation between CAOA and the leadership of the Armed Forces. Mr. Chatzipetrou, at the same time, expressed his support of the efforts of CAOA to solve the various problems related to the members’ working rights. Lastly, in his speech, the Chairman of CAOA, Mr. Christos Psaras, talked about the problems that have beset the National Guard for years (such as, among others, the Retirement and Promotion Regulations, the Working Hours regulations, a specialized system for the officers’ transfer) in their true dimension, accepting, in turn, warm congratulations by the guests and the audience.
The CAOA Council would like to thank all its members and honorary guests who honoured us with their presence. We remain constantly informed about any update on the matter and expect the implementation of the aforementioned commitments.
